4Bell's Axioms on Standards
Software
Posted by michael on Saturday October 16, @06:00AM
from the more-interesting-than-you-think dept.
CowboyRobot writes "The inimitable Gordon Bell has a 5-page article at ACM Queue on the difficulties and necessities of standards adoption, in which he lays out 11 axioms on how to best establish and adopt standards. He quotes MIT's Dave Clark, 'Standards setting sits in a boring trough between two exciting peaks. The first is the peak of technical innovation, and the second is the billion-dollar investment or market.' It's often the rush for money that makes us move to fast to do the job right."

Science Television: Does Joe Public Care?
Television
Posted by michael on Friday October 15, @07:59PM
from the mr.-wizard dept.
AVIDJockey writes "Wired News has an article about a new science television network. As someone who is a fan of TV shows that lack a shiny veneer of stupid, such as those found on UWTV, UCTV and ResearchChannel, I've wondered if hard science or technology programming will ever catch on with the general public. What do you think?"

Apple: InfiniBand Drivers Released for Xserve G5 Clusters
Networking (Apple)
Posted by pudge on Friday October 15, @07:30PM
from the insert-grunting-noise-here dept.
A user writes, "A company called Small Tree just announced the release of InfiniBand drivers for the Mac, for more supercomputing speed. People have already been making supercomputer clusters for the Mac, including Virginia Tech's third-fastest supercomputer in the world, but InfiniBand is supposed to make the latency drop. A lot. Voltaire also makes some sort of Apple InfiniBand products, though it's not clear whether they make the drivers or hardware."

Google
Posted by michael on Friday October 15, @06:00PM
from the multi-talented dept.
dioscaido writes "Users of the Google Desktop Search software beware -- it indexes your files across all users on your PC, bypassing user protections. The Google cache feature allows all users to browse the contents of messages and files it has indexed, irrespective of who is logged in. 'This is not a bug, rather a feature,' says Marissa Mayer, Google's director of consumer Web products. 'Google Desktop Search is not intended to be used on computers that are shared with more than one person.'" Reminds me of a Neal Stephenson essay: "The Hole Hawg is dangerous because it does exactly what you tell it to. It is not bound by t#qAFBBP`E4@@ځ B#zP ھKYAE@ lj4#qA|a`PEl@-tB# PzKYAE ھ1 4ơhe physical limitations that are inherent in a cheap drill, and neither is it limited by safety interlocks that might be built into a homeowner's product by a liability-conscious manufacturer. The danger lies not in the machine itself but in the user's failure to envision the full consequences of the instructions he gives to it."

Book Reviews
Don't choose your books in a mental vacuum -- take advantage of reader-submitted book reviews (and linked discussions) of science fiction, science, programming and other books. For instance:
  • Blaine Hilton's review of Hardware Hacking: "walks anyone through the process of modifying common electronic hardware."
  • Joshua Malone's review of Samba 3 by Example: offers pr#qAa~BBP`E4@@} B#zP ھKYW 4#qA`PEl@-pB# PzKYW ھ< 4actical examples of Samba 3 use in a small or large office.
  • Tony Williams' review of Running OS X Panther: well-balanced instruction (graphical and command-line) for intermediate-or-better Mac OS X users.
  • John Miles' review of Twisty Little Passages: "the definitive survey of interactive fiction for the literati... and the rest of us."
Submitting your own review for consideration is easy. Read Slashdot's book review guidelines carefully, and then use the web submission form. Updated: 200404127 17:00 by timothy
