This document is a much revised and expanded version of an earlier partial draft produced by the Text Encoding Initiative, published as a series of fascicles between April 1993 and August 1994 under the general name of P2. These parts derived from the first draft proposal (P1) of the Text Encoding Initiative, published in 1990 as Guidelines for the encoding and interchange of machine-readable texts edited by C.M.Sperberg-McQueen and Lou Burnard (Chicago and Oxford, ALLC/ACH/ACL Text Encoding Initiative, 1990). Earlier versions of several chapters of the present work appeared first as working papers of the TEI.

The revised reprint was carried out at Oxford during 1997 and 1998. See Prefatory note for further details. Modern English (a compromise form between BrE and AmE).
