many/all ??? newer Seagate disks have bad firmware.

If such a disk gets bad and has blocks that cannot be reassigned
without reformatting, you will have to return the disk
to the manufacturer. If you try to reformat such a disk,
everything will seem to be OK. The disk formats the usual
time and at the end of the procedure will deactivate 
and loop infinitely in firmware. When you power cycle it, the disk
will be inaccessible and return a "medium format corrupted"
error.
